Did you know that childhood hunger is a major issue in America? I honestly did not know this until last year when Gaby Dalkin posted all about a National Food Blogger Bake Sale effort with Share our Strength.
We were so moved by the issue that my mother and I coordinated a bake sale in Colorado and my sister coordinated a bake sale in California. With the help of bloggers, businesses, bakers, and friends we baked our little hearts out and sold lots of sweet treats. We collected over $800 and donated every single cent to Share our Strength to help end childhood hunger in America.
How do you feel when you are hungry? Can you imagine how hunger affects the daily life of a child? As mothers our hearts go out to these children. When we were growing up with our mother who was a single parent she often worked two to three jobs to ensure that we had food on the table. Nowadays with the current economy I can only imagine how difficult that is.
This year we are unsure if we will have time to coordinate bake sales due to our cookbook deadlines but we do want to be sure and spread the word about Hunger Hits Home.
Check out Hunger Hits Home — a new documentary about childhood hunger in America premiering April 14 at 8pm/7c on Food Network. Set your DVRs!
The new documentary, “Hunger Hits Home,” takes a first-hand look at the crisis of childhood hunger in America through the eyes of the parents, children, anti-hunger activists, educators and politicians on the frontlines of the battle. The film is part of an ongoing partnership between Food Network and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign to end childhood hunger in America by 2015.
