Bacon Candy

If you love bacon, sugar, and spice then you are going to D-I-E die when you taste these caramelized bacon strips. This crispy, sweet, and salty snack, with a touch of spice caught my attention in the December issue of Food & Wine magazine. I like this recipe so much I’ve already made it a couple of times. I think once you taste these crunchy strips you are going to want to make them over and over again. Why, because they’re easy and memorable. “Spicy favors stimulate endorphins and make people happier, so they have a better time,” says van Wyck, and I couldn’t agree more.

A big football celebration is just around the corner and thought this would be an easy recipe to make for the big day. We are big football fans, unfortunately my team (Dallas Cowboys) didn’t make it to the Super Bowl this year, but like millions of viewers out there, it won’t stop me from eating during the big game.

We are gearing up with an onslaught of delicious snacks, sides, and easy recipes between now and the big day to help you plan your game day menu. If you are going to a Super Bowl party you can take these caramelized bacon strips along to share. I promise these will be ravaged up quickly so be prepared to make several batches or suffer the consequences.

Bacon Candy


½ cup packed light brown sugar

1 ½ teaspoons chile powder

20 slices of thick cut bacon (1 ½ pounds)


Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Line 2 rimmed baking sheets with foil.

In a small bowl, whisk the brown sugar with the chile powder.

Arrange the bacon strips on the foil and coat the tops with the chile sugar. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until caramelized and almost crisp.

Transfer the bacon to a rack set over a sheet of foil to cool completely; serve.

Make Ahead: You can make these early in the day before your event. I like to keep these in the fridge until ready to serve. Put out about 30 minutes before your event.
