This year Americans will observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. Celebrations are held throughout this 30-day period by acknowledging histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Under President Lyndon Johnson the observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, but was later expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. September 15 is Independence Day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. In addition, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. I always wondered why Hispanic Heritage Month was celebrated mid September through mid October. Now I know.

This year’s theme is: “Heritage, Diversity, Integrity and Honor: The Renewed Hope of America”

Set the Mood
If you decide you need added ambiance then take the décor a step further and place luminarias along your walkway, or on your deck or patio. These are a beautiful addition if your fiesta is in the evening. The ambiance creates a warm and romantic feel with the warm glow from the candles inside brown paper bags or mason jars.
